PSYKE

Butterflies are a meaningful symbol to so many. But why?

For ancient greeks and romans nothing better symbolised the beautiful, ethereal, untrappable and hopeful nature of the mind and soul than the butterfly. It’s name, also meaning soul (and later to mean the mind) was ψυχή - transliterated as psyke.

But Psyke was someone else also - a nymph of greek mythology so beautiful she made Aphrodite jealous. On a mission to sabotage Psyke, Aphrodite’s son, Eros, the greek god of love, accidentally shoots her with his magical arrow and falls in love. Eros seduces Psyke incognito before being exposed and leaving their love in tatters. Asking Aphrodite for help, Psyke has to overcome four Herculean labours and in the process wins Eros’ love, Aphrodite’s respect and ascension to godhood. Winning.

Psyke’s story reminds us our mind is smart and beautiful and it’s study - ψυχή+λογία or psychology - is part of the canon of modern science. Ψ, pronounced psi, is used as its shorthand - crystalised by the winglike nature of the letter that compares to the butterfly.

It's where we get the modern word for mind: psyche - our entrancing, untrappable mind and soul.

Here at PSYKE we know that mindset matters. We want to empower your psyche, and that of your employees and clients.
